17th August Mount Barnett Roadhouse 181 kms today 6,288 kms to date

We had a leisurely start to the day due to the lack of Cockatoos or leaf blowers at Ellenbrae.  In fact it was a very peaceful place.  We had breakfast and were packed up by 8:30 when I discovered that two bolts that hold the base of the fuel tank were missing.  I asked Karen if they had a bucket of bolts we could search for replacements and she had.  So after rummaging around for a while we had found two suitable bolts, fitted them and were on our way.

The road was pretty good gravel for the first 60 kms until we reached the turn-off for Drysdale River.  Then the Gibb RR turned into a sandy rutted track for the next 40 kms.  Alan and I were having to ride flat stick to keep our bikes upright and several times nearly came to grief.  When we got to the sealed jump up at Gibb River Station we stopped and both exclaimed “Farq that was hairy!”

Then there was a long section of road works and diversions which we rode at reduced pace followed by a long freshly formed section which was like riding down a freeway.  This deteriorated a bit before we got to Mt Barnett but was relatively easy compared to the earlier section.  We booked into our Dongas and had some lunch watching Australia and New Zealand fight out a draw in the Bledisloe Cup game in Sydney.  We plan to watch the MotoGP from Brno tonight after tea.

Dongas!!

Everything was going well until Alan noticed that the back tyre on the DR was flat!  Despite our best efforts, we couldn’t get the tyre off the rim.  Dear knows what we would have done if it had gone down on the GRR. I would probably have been tossed off the bike.  It turns out that there is a tyre service 30kms down the road so I am going to blag a lift there tomorrow morning to try and fit a new tube that I have with me.  We are fortunate in our misfortune!
