20th August – Halls Creek – 545 kms today, 7,156 kms to date.

We rose early after we realised we had to ride approx 550kms today to get from Derby to Halls Creek. Colin cooked up a storm for breakfast on the camp kitchen at the West Kimberley Lodge. We managed to get away at 9.05am.

Alan re-inflating his tyres after the finish of the Gibb River Road.

This is a view of the road into Fitzroy Crossing. It is raised above the flood plain to protect it from the annual “big wet”.  You could imagine it being isolated in an inland sea of flood water.

The scenery on the road between Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek was quite interesting with various rock formations a lot different to the road between Derby and Fitzroy Crossing which is flat and fairly dull.  This whole area used to be under the sea 250 million years go and we were in effect riding across the sea bed.  The high ground was associated with coral reefs and are built of limestone - these are called the Devonian Reef from the geological era.

We have completed a 1,800 km loop around the Kimberley

This is the Halls Creek end of the Tanami Road. We have just completed a full circle of some 1800 kms from Halls Creek north east up The Great Northern Highway and west along the Gibb River Road and back up the Great Northern Highway to Halls Creek again.

My BMW is playing up a bit with the motor hesitating when I try to accelerate hard in higher gears. We thought it might be the 91 octane and Opal fuel we have been using over the past few weeks as my bike really needs 95 octane. I have put a couple of tanks of 95 octane through but it doesn’t seem to be making any difference. Hopefully the bike will keep going until I get home!!!!

We are staying at the Kimberley Hotel tonight in a budget room where bugger all works in the bathroom. We had a couple of beers and bangers and mash for dinner in the Sports Bar. Being totally rooted after a hard days riding we are off to bed early.  We met a fellow rider in the Shell Servo and he is riding the same route as us back to Brisbane, so we may cross paths again.
